When Has The SyFy Channel Done Itself Any Favors?

Yes, we all know that the SyFy Channel hasn't done anyone else any favors, whether it be anyone in Science Fiction fandom or Battlestar Galactica (1978) fandom, but that would've been too easy an issue to devote an entire post to. Seriously though....when has the SyFy Channel done itself any favors? When was the last time Bonnie Hammer, David Howe, and Mark Stern woke up in the morning and said to themselves....."By golly, today is the day that the SyFy Channel will start making money hook or by crook?" Or....."Today is the day that we sever all ties with Ronald D. Moore because quite frankly.....the guy is a money losing laundering machine?" Or....."Today is the day that we cancel WWF Wrestling and the Saturday night monster movies because both are really stupid ass programming ideas?"
SyFy Channel is such an unbelievably "fucked up" cable channel, that it can't even do itself any favors along the lines of what I just mentioned. It is a dysfunctional little cable channel on "automatic cruise control" and "automatic pilot" to such an extent....that many of the bad habits of the channel put into place when Bonnie Hammer was more intimately involved with its programming.....now automatically renew themselves regardless of the fact that money isn't being made from the bad habits...."Ronald D. Moore's umpteenth sequel series"......"WWF Wrestling"......."Saturday Night Turd Fest at the Movies".......cancelling perfectly good television series that could have gone on for at least a decade ("Farscape").....driving nails into the coffin of the "Stargate" television franchise.
This is where Comcast needs to come in. Comcast needs to revamp the SyFy Channel management structure to such an extent (pink slipping Bonnie Hammer, David Howe, and Mark Stern), and revamp the "old guard" attitude towards the SyFy Channel to such an extent.....now looking upon the SyFy Channel as a subsidiary that really does need to make money, while wholeheartedly embracing its intended Science Fiction identity....will now prevail. For the past decade and a half, SyFy Channel (Sci-Fi Channel) has been mismanaged by dysfunctional management (Bonnie Hammer, David Howe, Mark Stern) who could care less about the channel, could care less about what the channel is supposed to stand for, and could care less about what their intended responsibilities are at the channel. The one and only thing that Bonnie Hammer, David Howe, and Mark Stern have ever cared about for the past decade....is keeping their personal friend (Ronald D. Moore) employed. This has been their "Holy Grail" of a mission statement for the past decade alone at the SyFy Channel. Everything else be damned at the SyFy Channel. Quality programming, Science Fiction programming, doing "Battlestar Galactica" the way it is supposed to be done. Aside from keeping Ronald D. Moore employed......Bonnie Hammer, David Howe, and Mark Stern have had no other reason to professionally exist at the SyFy Channel. Thus....the umpteenth "Ronald D. Moore Sequel Series" is just around the corner (low ratings be damned.) All other aspects of the SyFy Channel's programming slate be damned. Neglect of everything else.....for the sake of Ronald D. Moore.
In a way....it's alot like when "Return of the Jedi" was in production in the early 1980s. George Lucas had a priority shift during this time in his life. As his passion for working on the "Indiana Jones" movies was increasing, his enthusiasm for working on the "Star Wars" movies was decreasing. It shows in every aspect of "Return of the Jedi", doesn't it? The troubled script, the troubled performances, the rehashed screenplay, Richard Marquand's inability to work with the "Star Wars" cast and extract sparkling performances from them. Make no mistake...."Return of the Jedi" was a troubled production of such magnitude, that its faults will always be glaring on the screen. George Lucas's "Holy Grail" at this time....was exclusively the "Indiana Jones" movies....."Star Wars" be damned. Neglect of "Star Wars".....for the sake of "Indiana Jones."
